How Much Does It Cost to Run a Hot Tub?

Use the calculator for an instant estimate, or read on for a full breakdown of how this cost is calculated.

Quick Answer

$50–$100/month

Varies by equipment & usage

How Hot Tub Electricity Cost Is Calculated

Hot tub energy use comes from two sources: the heater (to maintain water temperature) and the circulation/jet pumps. The heater is the dominant cost — it runs for hours each day to offset heat loss through the shell and cover.

A typical hot tub has a 5–6 kW heater. If it runs 4 hours/day to maintain temperature in moderate weather: 5.5 kW × 4 hrs × 30 days × $0.16/kWh = $105/month. In warmer climates or with a high-quality insulated cover, heater run time drops significantly.

Jet pump use is secondary — a typical 2 HP jet pump draws about 1,500 watts. An hour of jet use per day adds: 1.5 kW × 1 hr × 30 days × $0.16 = $7.20/month.

Factors That Affect the Cost

Insulation quality — poorly insulated shells and covers are the biggest cost driver

Cover quality — a well-fitting insulated cover dramatically reduces heat loss

Outdoor temperature — cold climates require much more heating energy

Set temperature — each degree lower saves noticeable energy

Jet and circulation pump hours

Hot tub size — larger volume = more water to heat
